Balancing act around Cape of Good Hope*

During 40 days this spring, the M/V Hawk has been sailing with the floating dry-dock ADBS-1, for Promaritime from Abu Dhabi, UAE to Brest, France.

The challenging and exciting project started at the end of April, in Abu Dhabi, where the floating dry-dock measuring 180 by 37 meters, was loaded and diagonally stowed on Hawk’s deck. The impressive overhang of the dock, measuring approximately 32m on each side of Hawk, in combination with the vessel’s already sizeable beam of 55.5m resulted in an overall transport width of close to 120m!

With the exceptional experience of the captain and crew on board the vessel, Hawk was able to safely navigate around Cape of Good Hope with only minimal delays due to adverse weather and without stopping in any safe haven such as Port Elizabeth.

Hawk arrived in Brest, France on 8th June 2021 where the floating dry-dock was smoothly and seamlessly discharged the following day, with professional support from Promaritime in the coordination of the marine operations.

As per Promaritime’ s information, the ADBS-1 will be towed to DAMEN shipyard, where it will stay for 2 months and will receive paint and few repairs. After that, the unit will be wet towed to its destination in the port of Rouen to get ready for operations.
